One page letter; when folded (as shown) measures approx. 5" x 6 3/8"; paper clip impression and mark on front and back; pencil notations on back from Argus Ogborn (noted for his extensive document and manuscript collection).
Famed Early Political Cartoonist, Homer Davenport Letter-Later Victim Of Titanic Disaster!
Homer Davenport (1867-1912) had a varied career as a circus clown, elephant oiler, locomotive engine wiper, and
the world's highest paid political cartoonist.
He was also an importer and breeder of pure-bred Arabian horses.
In 1895, he was discovered by William Randolph Hearst and brought to New York to draw the Evening Journal.  It was here his powerful work attracted wide attention and he quickly achieved national fame.
His last cartoon, which probably resulted in his death, was of the Titanic disaster.  He had gone down to the dock the night the RMS Carpathia was due, the ship returning the Titanic survivors.  It was there he caught a cold, which turned into pneumonia and resulted in his death.
A great autographed letter mentioning
T.H. Nast (the second greatest political cartoonist and his rival).
We can date this letter from 1901-1912 by Davenport's address on the letterhead.

My Dear Mr. Lockwood:
It is a pleasure and an honor to have my autograph along sid {sic} of Th Nast.  And I trust the enclosed will answer the purpose.
