    Description

This is a 1935 letter written and signed
    by
    the
    Assistant Secretary to the Governor
    General of Canada.
    The Governor
    General of Canada at that
    time was
    John Buchan
    (1875-1940), the
    famous
    Scottish novelist, historian, and
Unionist politician. He is best known as
the author of the classic thriller & mystery
    novel
    THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS
    , which
was made into a popular film in 1935 by
    the great director Alfred Hitchcock.
This letter was written and signed by John
    Buchan's assistant secretary, F. L. C. Pereira.
    This was
    Frederick Llnwood Clinton Pereira
(1880-1958). Mr. Pereira served under several
Governor Generals of Canada, and received
    many honors for his service.
He was born in London, England, and moved
to Ottawa in 1888. Among his many interests
were music, the theater, and cricket.
On January 1, 1933, King George V conferred
upon Mr. Pereira the Order of the British Empire.
Pereira was honored by George VI on July 1, 1946,
when he was created a Commander of the Royal
    Victorian Order.
    Pereira held commissions as Deputy
    Governor
from seven Governors General. In 1940,
    and
    again
in 1945, he was appointed Deputy Administrator.
The letter is dated November 26, 1935.
It is typed on an 13" by 8" sheet
    of Pereira
    's
    stationery.
    There is an embossed emblem
    at the
    top
    of
    the sheet, which states
    "
    OFFICE
    OF
    THE
    GOVERNOR GENERAL'S
    SECRETARY, CANADA"
    . This emblem
can be seen in the last two images.
    (
    NOTE
: I have severely adjusted the
    lighting
in the last image, in order to
    make
    the emblem appear more visible,
    and
the writing in it more legible.)
The letter is addressed to an American
    autograph collector, whose name was
    Andrew Coddington. Coddington had
requested the autograph of John Buchan,
    who had become the
    Governor
    General
of Canada just three weeks earlier.
In the letter, Pereira explains that Buchan
had made it a personal rule "
    ....not to give
his autograph to anyone with whom he
    is
    not personally acquainted.
    "
