Description
LettersThese letters are correspondence back and forth with Mr. (later given an honorary doctorate by the Tax Commission) Walter G. Query. He was the President of the South Carolina Tax Commission and also very active with the Synod. Most of the letters in these lots have other letters stapled to them. There will be several lots listed with several years. There is some very interesting correspondence in this lot. There is also some that refer to the war in several of the lots. One of his daughters that wrote him frequently was in the WAC (Womans Army Corps). This is a great addition to any historical collection!
There are a few letters that speak about the liquor laws and a specific company losing its business license in 1940. Also one between Dr. SR Higgins (President of Allen University) and Mr. Query regarding the SC Commission refusing a liquor license even after there was protests lodged against them
There is also correspondence between Mr. Query and James F Byrnes (Director of War Mobilization at the time) and Senator Burnet R Maybank about Mr. Query's daughter being recommended for promotion in the WAC in 1944!
Also, there is a neat one documenting a case were a child was taken out of the custody of one person and put in the care of another to allow the child to decide where they wanted to live. That was in 1941.
All of these letters, receipts, etc were found in the attic of a home in Wellford, SC. It could have possibly been his home, but I am not sure. Most of these items are in decent condition based on their age, however, please check the pictures for the actual condition. the paper is thin and fragile, so I took the pictures and then gently put them in manila envelopes. These will be shipped in boxes to ensure their safety during shipping. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me about it. I will work with anyone on price if you are interested in purchasing multiple lots.
