    Description

This auction is for a rare 1937 letter/note written by a travelling companion of Elsie de Wolfe Mendl on Stoomvaart Maatschappy ~ Nederland Steamship stationery.  The note regard a phone call to St. Moritz, Switzerland about a Surprise as noted on the front of the envelope.  Written in black ink with a distinctive hand and signed with a flourish...TM.  Signed on the back of the envelope::  "Toni Montgomery....travelling with Elsie Mendel (sic) Mendl."  Elsie took many voyages...she always seemed to be cruising.
Many years ago I acquired a large stash of Elsie de Wolfe memorabilia including a scrapbooks and books.  One of the notations referenced a trip from Java to Genoa, Italy in the Spring of 1937 and accompanied by an inscription: "Toni, Clarence, Lady M. and I... four wonderful days in Egypt."  We don't know who Toni was...perhaps Antoinette Montgomery, who became the famous photographer, Toni Montgomery Frissell or Countess Madeleine de Montgomery.  Wonderful piece of Elsie de Wolfe memorabilia...certainly rare.  It would be lovely conversation piece when framed...such beautiful handwriting...calligraphy.
