    Description

    Wehrmacht prison guard
Feldpost letter - without envelope - written by a German, dated in Skierniewice/Poland in 1944
During World War II, the city was occupied and the entire Jewish population was deported and killed in the death camps. When the soldier wrote this letter, the local commandant's office of the Commander of the Central Army Region was located there, as well as the Wehrmacht penitentiary with imprisoned German soldiers of the well-known " Probation Division 500".
The soldier wrote the following lines:
    Skierniewice, 18. december 1944
Dear aunt, uncle and children !
I especially hope that you are all still safe and sound, which I can say about myself. Dear Irmgard, I thank you for your 2 letters that you wrote to me, but in the meantime I have been in Mainz for vacation. Unfortunately it was not possible for Hildegard and me to go to Biebersheim because I only had a short vacation and it was dangerous because of the low-flying enemy planes. And without the child, I didn't want to. Yes, the little one was a lot of fun, she is really cute our little doll. I wanted to get my winter clothes in Strasbourg, but unfortunately it was no longer possible. We'll be going there sometime later. Christmas is coming soon and there are sad holidays. I'm happy when it's all over There is no longer any vacation, but if we all stay healthy and the war is over soon, we want to be satisfied. Mother and Hildegard told me that your pig died. This is a great deal of harm. How I would have loved to have taken part in the battle feast, and certainly Hildegard too. What is little Gerola doing? Heini is now a soldier. It doesn't hurt a little boy if he plays a soldier. At the moment i'm in jail where i'm on duty 24 hours a day and then have 24 hours off. We cannot drive because there is no petrol. I don't like it here and I'm trying to get somewhere else. Out of the east and towards the west. Now, my dear ones, I wish you all a nice and merry christmas and see you again soon. Unfortunately, I cannot send a Christmas card as there are none in this nest. Your Hans greets and kisses you warmly
